The 2017 gas tax bill that was signed into law last year should have a positive impact on Rutherford County. The bill increases the tax on gas by 6 cents over a three year period. A portion of that money will help to fund road projects throughout the state and locally.
The department receives funding from state fuel tax - which is slowly increasing over the next few years, portions of the wheel tax, and portions of the mineral severance tax. The only property tax it receives is to do off road right-of-way, county approved, drainage problems.
The fuel tax increased by 4-cents this past July and will go up another cent this summer followed by another 1-cent increase in July of 2019.
