Rutherford County is the home to two new state champions. The Rock Springs Middle girls and the Oakland Middle boys won the Mid-State Basketball Championships in Clarksville Saturday. Rock Springs went 25-0 on the year and beat out county rival Christiana 39-29. It was the third meeting of these schools this year. Tyra Hughes scored 18 and Kesha Brady chipped in 10 in the victory. Alexis Whittington had 10 for the Lady Cougars.
After holding on to a 12-7 first quarter lead, the Oakland Chargers held Kenwood to only four points in each of the final three quarters to pull away with a 39-19 win for the mid-state title. Oakland, which finished the year 21-and-2, were led by Omar Lyons 12 points and Dre Litaker's 9. The Chargers finished as the regular season champions here in Rutherford County.
