The words to Lee Greenwood's patriotic classic keep going through my head, "And I'm proud to be an American . . .". Here in Rutherford County there are numerous Independence Day celebrations and all are unique and special.

Fri (July 1, 2016) 5-9PM Smyrna Independence Day Celebration in the Lee Victory Recreation Park (102 Sam Ridley Parkway; Smyrna, TN). Free inflatables, plus food vendors, $1 train rides, climbing wall, live music, and of course--FIREWORKS!

Fri. (July 1, 2016) 6:30-9:30PM FRIDAY NIGHT LIVE on the east side of the Historic Rutherford County Courthouse. Bring your lawn chair, meet your friends and enjoy great music of Mosaic Rhythm--all FREE--thanks to Mainstreet Murfreesboro.

Mon. (July 4, 2016) 8:45AM "4 on the 4th" at 4 mile run/walk at Providence Christian Academy (410 DeJarnette Ln.). (Fee: $35 in advance; $40 on race day). The Kid's Fun Run for ages 4-9 is at 8:45AM for $10. Then live music, carnival food, and inflatables. For more information, phone 615-220-1600.

Mon. (July 4, 2016) 10AM-10PM Rockvale 4th of July Picnic at the Rockvale Community Center and Park (9920 Rockvale Road). The event will include food, beverages, men's softball tournament, opportunity to meet political candidates running for local office, and the opportunity to fellowship with the community. Mon. (July 4, 2016) 3:30PM Family games, inflatables, food trucks and more at Murfreesboro's Annual CELEBRATION UNDER THE STARS at McKnight Park (beside SportsCom; 2310 Memorial Blvd.). Live music at 7PM and the Murfreesboro Symphony at 8PM, plus fireworks at 9PM. It's all free!

Mon (July 4, 2016) 5PM Gates open at Veterans Memorial Park (5093 Murfreesboro Rd., La Vergne, TN) for the City of La Vergne's INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATION. Enjoy barbecue, live music, balloon artist, face painting, inflatables, and a spectacular fireworks show at dusk. Free admission--bring blankets and lawn chair and join your neighbors and family for an old fashioned 4th of July.
