Rutherford County Schools on Social Media & Threats

Social media has changed the landscape of communication. But one negative is the ability for students to lodge threats that all have to be taken seriously and be investigated.

Last week's threat of violence at Riverdale High School caused major disruption. Rutherford County Schools' Safety Director Josh Kubly tells NewsRadio WGNS it takes a lot of law enforcement resources to investigate threats like the one made last week:

Kubly says the ripple effect of the Riverdale threat led to what they call "copycat posts..."

Kubly added each threat has to be taken seriously, especially in the time in which we are living. He says someone threatening they have a bomb on a plane is taken much more seriously now than 20-years ago. The same is true in these situations.

And while these threats are treated with the highest priority, it still leads to disruption at the schools where they are lodged. Well over half of the student body at Riverdale last Friday was absent from class.
