You might think radio stations would have rooms of vintage audio. But in fact, it hasn't been until the invention of digital audio archiving that's become even feasible. However, we've got a few recordings, even dating back to 1947.
WGNS signed on the air January 1st, 1947. Since then, covering local sports has been a major part of the fabric of the station's legacy. Here are just a few of the audio highlights of the tens of thousands of games broadcast by announcers like Ray Duffy, B.K. Hamm, Monte Hale, Chip Walters, Jeff Jordan, Bryan Barrett and Jon Dinkins.
Radio broadcasters from across Tennessee honored twelve persons this past Saturday night (5/14/2016) by inducting them into the Tennessee Radio Hall of Fame. One was from Murfreesboro.
From the Daily News Journal in 1946: "Murfreesboro’s new radio station WGNS, operating at 1450 on the dial goes into operation tonight with a special local program and a New Year’s program via the Mutual Broadcasting System"
WGNS has created about 50 different bumper stickers over the years. This is just a very small sample of some of thise stickers. Did we say "very small sample?"
The 1980's and 1990's were a fun time for WGNS. It was a time of CONSTANT growth in Rutherford County. With growth came radio remote after radio remote. These are a few of the pictures we gathered over the years.

In the 1980's, WGNS would send out a daily fax that updated business owners on new topics for the day. Of course, this was before people could simply "log on" to WGNSradio.com to read the daily news. Rutherford County is a community that is rich in history. From Oakland’s Mansion to the Princess Theater, there are so many memories for so many people. WGNS was proudly the first AM radio station in the United States to begin this expanded FM translator service to our community. The station began FM coverage at 9:00 o’clock Thursday morning, March 1, 2007. Now, in addition to hearing the Good Neighbor Station at AM 1450, you can now listen on FM 100.5 and FM 101.9. Of course, our over-the-air TV channel 11 coverage will continue.
At 7:32AM (Central Time) Easter Sunday morning, April 15, 2001, a severe storm hit Rutherford County. The Straight From The Heart radio broadcast suddenly went silent. Bart called the new technician on duty and asked him to step out the front door and see if the tower lights were "on". That would tell whether the electricity was still working at the transmitter.
As the New Year of 1947 approached, rural Rutherford County had a dramatically different feel than that of today. Approximately 8,000 persons populated the entire county. It was a big thing for the county to get its first radio station! Word is that on the night of December 31, 1946, throughout the county people were tuning their radio dials.
