Cheers sounded when Riverdale Principal Tom Nolan, School Resource Officers James Coots and Shawn Jones and teachers shaved their heads Friday to raise $3,678.48 to fight childhood cancer.

Teacher Christie Crowell, the only woman to have her head shaved, listened to rousing cheers and the sounds of drums and cymbals. Students gave her a standing ovation. She raised $1,300 for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation.

Leah Smallwood, 6, who has cancer, was the honoree for the event. Her sister, Riverdale student Kayla Wilson, said Leah receives treatment every two weeks from St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Philadelphia.

Teacher David Limbaugh combed out his locks of long hair before he received a Mohawk.

SRO Coots said he and SRO Jones proposed to Riverdale High School’s Student Council to raise funds for St. Baldrick’s Foundation.

Junior Class President Melanie Brumfield, who chairs the Student Council service projects, said students and faculty members have donated funds during the past six weeks.

“We’ve raised almost $4,000,” Brumfield said, adding the donations honored Leah, “our honorary childhood hero.”
