A soldier from Smyrna with the Army National Guard has been awarded the Purple Heart. Sgt. James Schrier received the award after receiving a number of injuries while serving in Iraq.
The vehicle that Sgt. Schrier was in was struck by an armor piercing grenade in 2009. Schrier had traumatic brain injury after the ambush.
The Smyrna man was presented with Purple Heart during a ceremony that was held late last week. The purple heart is a military decoration for those wounded or killed in action. The award was established in 1782 and reestablished in 1932.
