Smyrna Town Manager Harry Gill, Jr. announced his retirement, effective Aug. 31, at the Town Council meeting Tuesday. Gill has served as Town Manager since 2013.
Gill has been a lifelong member of the Smyrna community. He was a teacher and basketball coach at Smyrna High School for 16 years and helped lead the Lady Bulldogs to a state championship in 1982. Gill later served as principal of Cedar Grove Elementary School, before being selected as the Rutherford County Director of Schools in 2003, where he served for nine years.
"Harry's impact as our town manager has been significant. The leadership he provided, in helping to manage Smyrna's unprecedented growth, while also striving to enhance the quality of life for residents, is greatly appreciated by all who have worked with him," Smyrna Mayor Mary Esther Reed said.
The Smyrna Town Council will begin the search for the next Town Manager now, to ensure a seamless transition when the successful candidate begins work in August.
