Forty years ago, REALTOR® Bill Carey of Murfreesboro was looking for a way to support the American Diabetes Association and other local needs and charity requests. He had the idea to put together a new fundraiser- a golf scramble on a warm June afternoon with lots of fun and prizes. The first-ever Rutherford County golf scramble would be played at Mr. Carey's new development on Hwy. 231 called Fox Run (which was on the site of the old Murfreesboro Country Club). This site is now the location of Indian Hills Golf Club and subdivision. In 1997, Bill saw the need for additional support for the local Middle Tennessee Association of REALTORS® (MTAR) Scholarship fund and volunteered to share the proceeds of the Scramble to help more local high school seniors attend college."The Original," the oldest charity golf scramble in Rutherford County, over its 40 years has raised more than $250,000 to support the American Diabetes Association, the MTAR Scholarship Fund and other causes.

The 40th Annual Bill Carey REALTOR® Golf Scramble, presented by First Community Mortgage and Ameri Care Services, will be played at Indian Hills Golf Club, at the site of that first golf scramble, on Wednesday, June 7, 2017. Lunch will be served at 11:30am with a live charity auction at noon, and a Shotgun start at 1:00pm.

The cost to play is $100 for an individual and $400 for a team of four. Golfers wanting register should contact the MTAR office at 615-893-2242 or download a registration form at www.mtar.org. Entries will be accepted up to and including the day of the tournament, but the earlier the entries, the better organizers can plan. There are also sponsorships available to fit all budgets.

All proceeds from the 40th Annual Bill Carey REALTOR® Golf Scramble will benefit the American Diabetes Association and the MTAR Scholarship Fund. In Tennessee, 10.2 percent of all adults (about 517,000) have been diagnosed with diabetes, according to the ADA. The proceeds that the American Diabetes Association receives from this golf scramble helps to make it possible for them to improve the lives of thousands of Tennesseans each year through research, education and programs. The Middle Tennessee Association of REALTORS® Scholarship Fund annually helps incoming freshmen from "our home towns" with their first year of college. Applications are accepted each spring from high school seniors planning to attend an accredited 2-year or 4-year college or university that is physically located within the 8-county MTAR area. In addition, the student must currently reside in one of those counties. This year MTAR will present 6 Scholarship Awards for fall 2017/spring 2018.

The mission of the Middle Tennessee Association of REALTORS® is to promote the use and value of REALTORS® for all real estate transactions; to protect real estate ownership and private property rights; to provide local market information to our members and communities; and to unite those engaged in the real estate profession by promoting and maintaining high standards of conduct. MTAR is a not-for-profit trade association serving over 1500 real estate professionals across the Middle Tennessee region. MTAR serves Bedford, Cannon, Coffee, Franklin, Grundy, Marion, Moore and Rutherford Counties in Tennessee.
