The Discovery Center in Murfreesboro submitted a letter of intent to the City of Franklin asking for a feasibility study for a future museum in the Williamson County community. The letter was submitted earlier this year and Franklin appears to be very interested in the idea.

The Discovery Center is looking to build a 45,000 square foot children's museum on city owned property along the Harpeth River, south of Mack Hatcher Parkway in Franklin.

Looking back, the Discovery Center in Murfreesboro started as the Children's Discovery House in 1986. Local citizens worked together to purchase an older home at 503 North Maple Street, which is where the first museum was opened in 1987.

A newer and much larger museum was later built on Broad Street in the area of where the old Coca-Cola Bottling Company once stood in Murfreesboro. That new museum was opened in 2002 with the organization later adding on in 2007.

On May 19, 2017, the City of Franklin put together documents suggesting that they were in favor of such a venture. If the Discovery Center does build a $25 to $30 million facility in Franklin, then Franklin will likely agree to a $1 per year lease of acreage for the future museum that would be contracted with the City of Murfreesboro. Franklin would also provide electricity and maintenance of all outside areas.

A letter of interest by the City of Franklin closed with, "We're excited to bring this project to fruition, providing yet another reason to fall in love with Franklin and Williamson County."
