What's all that smoke in the air? Stones River National Battlefield's Chief of Operations Gib Backlund told NewsRadio WGNS that they continue the practice of prescribed fires.

He explained, "Prescribed fire, also known as a controlled burn, refers to the controlled application of fire by a team of fire experts under specified weather conditions. This helps to restore health to the environment."

These prescribed fires reduce excessive amounts of brush, shrubs, and trees, while encouraging the new growth of native vegetation.

Backlund noted that specially trained wildland firefighters from the Natchez Trace Parkway are conducting the prescribed fires at the Stones River National Battlefield.
