Starting next year, lottery players will have two high-jackpot lottery games to play in Tennessee. The state is adding Mega Millions in addition to its Powerball games. For players, adding this second game means people have more chances to win big jackpots — and more people playing means more money raised for college students. Tennessee players will have a chance to enter Mega Millions lottery games as soon as the first quarter of 2010. It’s another game with big payouts. Up until now, states had to choose between Powerball and Mega Millions, but in October, the two groups came to agreement that states could sell both.
Soon, Tennesseans will be able to play Powerball on Wednesdays and Saturdays and Mega Millions on Tuesdays and Fridays. "Lots of people only play big jackpot games," said Rebecca Hargrove, Tennessee Lottery CEO. "When they reach $100 million or $200 million or $300 million, and with the ability to play two high-stakes games, they’ll have the ability to get to those jackpots with much more frequency."
Last year, Powerball didn’t have any $300 million jackpots. Hargrove said students are the ultimate winners; she predicts Mega Millions will bring in an extra $10 to $15 million in profits every year.
Mega Millions will take the place of Lotto Plus, an in-state game that plays on the same days as Mega Millions
