The MTSU Department of Art is holding a special exhibit in entitled Magic Lanterns in Todd Art Gallery now through February 21. Curated by the department’s Student Gallery Committee the exhibit features the work of sculpture students Russell White and Brian Bailey. White and Bailey are visual artists that work with a variety of media ranging from sculpture and painting to video projection and sound experimentation. As a result, the exhibit will present a visually surreal mash-up of digital effects and analogue video experiments based on larger interpretations of life, art, and culture.

Conceptually, the artists strive to communicate their experimentation to the broader audience while incorporating the beauty found in the mundane of everyday life as filtered through personal memory.

The video projections that encompass the exhibition space allow the work a continuous interaction between the artists, the environment, and the viewer. With these, form and light are utilized to alter one’s perception of the work and present each exhibit viewer with a different perspective of the work’s simultaneous occurrence.

Visually the work relates to past art movements in post painterly abstraction, minimalism, and new image painting.
