Tommy Hood Died Tuesday Morning In Halls Hill Pike Crash
April 21, 2009
The first call about a box truck crashing into a tree came into the Rutherford County Sheriffs Office at 10:52 Tuesday morning (4/21/09). The driver was unconscious when the first responder arrived on the scene. The 60-year old man was rushed to Middle Tennessee Medical Center. However, efforts to save Thomas M. Hood were not successful. Responders to the crash scene on Halls Hill Pike near Factory Road became concerned when they detected a strong smell that irritated their eyes. Rutherford Emergency Management sent the HAZMAT team to the scene. Tim Hooker told WGNS News that there were a variety of farm supplies in the truck that began mixing together when the accident occurred. He also noted that this section of Halls Hill Pike remained closed for over four-hours while the hazardous materials team did a clean-up. The truck was from Dairy Partners in Decherd, Tennessee. This firm sells cheese to the public as well as selling agricultural supplies to farmers. They confirmed that Tommy Hood was an employee of the firm, and that he and his wife lived in Franklin. Later, WGNS learned that he was the son of a former Franklin city police chief. The late L. Morgan Hood was head of that law enforcement agency in the 60’s. Tommy Hood’s death is the 11th traffic fatality in Rutherford County this year.
