Two Children Found to be Wandering in a Murfreesboro Parking Lot

A 21 year old Murfreesboro woman has been arrested and charged with two counts of "Attempted Aggravated Child Neglect."

Andrea Lewis of Battle Avenue was arrested by officers this week when they responded to a call at the Sonic Drive In on Middle Tennessee Boulevard. Once there, a citizen told them they had found two toddlers walking through the nearby Kroger parking lot.

The children, ages one and three, were wearing a diaper and what appeared to be a night shirt. The three year old had injuries to her arm, a soiled diaper and looked to have been unattended for quite some time. The one year old was without shoes and had cuts on his feet.

Lewis, the mother of the children, was located and claimed that she had gotten up that morning and walked to the Sonic Drive In. Lewis said while out got she had gotten sick and that her boyfriend was supposed to be watching the kids. The local mother said that she asked a stranger to call an ambulance for her and she was later transported to the hospital.

Emergency Medical Service personnel told police that she was coherent and answering questions in the ambulance. However, she did not say anything about children.

As police continued to speak to the mother, she later changed her story and said that she never actually asked her boyfriend to watch the children. Witnesses say the children wandered the parking lot for about three hours unattended.

The Department of Children Services responded to the scene an took custody of the children. Lewis was then charged with "Attempted Aggravated Child Neglect."

Lewis will be in court on July 14, 2016. As of Wednesday (5/18/16) afternoon, Lewis was still behind bars and unable to make bond.
