A Rutherford County Circuit Court jury found two men guilty in a murder-for-hire plot involving one of the men's wife, who was supposed to be killed just days after he took out a $6 million life insurance policy on her.

Pratikkuman Patel, of Gallatin, and his cousin, Kalpesh Patel, of Murfreesboro were remanded into custody and will be sentenced Oct. 16 by Judge David Bragg on convictions of solicitation and conspiracy to commit first-degree murder.

In 2013, the TBI opened the case after receiving information that two subjects had solicited a potential hit man to shoot Pratakkumer Patel's wife. Pratakkumer is the cousin of Kalpesh Patel. The two paid the hit man $15,000 cash and provided an address, vehicle description and photograph of the intended victim..

"It's a sad case, but justice was done," prosecuting attorney Sarah Davis said moments after Rutherford County Sheriff's deputies led the Patels out of court as their family members consoled each other and consulted with attorneys.

Before the trial, defense attorneys contended search warrants for phone records were not handled properly and that statutes don't apply to a conspiracy to solicit a crime. The case will likely go to the Tennessee Court of Appeals.
