Thanks to funding from the Tennessee Department of Transportation for “Safe Routes to School," sidewalks and crosswalks are being installed to access several schools in the City ofLa Vergne. As part of the grant funding, the city must also offer educational opportunities related to walking and bike safety for school children in grades K through 8.

“As a coordinated school health program school, we like to take every opportunity we can to promote physical fitness and good health,” said Principal Jeff McCann ofLaVergneLakeElementary School.  “All La Vergne Lake Elementary students are encouraged to walk or bike to school on Friday, October 19.  As a true ‘neighborhood school’ we want to encourage this as a regular method of getting to and from school.”

“We are meeting at the LMS sign at the corner of David’s Way andFloyd Mayfield Driveand walking together to La Vergne Lake Elementary,” said McCann. “I am also providing all participating students with bottled water and a box of crayons from TDOT.  We hope this will be a fun way to promote living a healthy lifestyle and making small changes in daily habits that will lead to healthy living.”

Although the national walk-to-school day was observed on October 3, Rutherford County Schools were on Fall Break.
