It started with a simple ear infection last summer…

The infection got worse, so Meghan and Jacob Smith took 10-month old Sadie to the hospital in Murfreesboro. They were then referred to Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital in Nashville. That’s where the news went downhill and fear set in.

The word tumor is bad enough for parents to hear, but the word Neuroblastoma is even scarier, especially when you don’t know what it means. Sadies's father Jacob said...

WGNS’ Scott Walker asked Smith where he was when he got the confirmation that Sadie had cancer…

Sadie underwent chemotherapy for months and throughout the process the family prayed and prayed for Sadie to be healed. Residents in the community, whom the family had never met, even held fundraisers to help the family offset expenses due to the extensive time spent at the hospital and away from work. One of those residents was Tracy Tucker who owns the Beehive Hair Salon on Old Fort Parkway. Tucker held an outdoor concert, a cut-a-thon, a silent auction and had vendors selling food in order to raise funds for the family…

By the time that event was over, along with a chili dinner, $30,000 had been raised and donated to the Smith family.

While that news may have been good, the treatment that Sadie was going through continued to have its ups and downs. Sadie may have felt good one day and then sick the next. Sadies father said everything happened so fast, but he will never forget the journey…

And then the prayers were answered...

We asked Smith what he would tell a family who just received the news that their child has cancer…

Has the past year brought you and your wife Meghan closer together?
