WGNS was “live” from 5th floor of new hospital Monday morning!
December 7, 2009
How close is Middle Tennessee Medical Center to opening it massive new hospital on the Medical Center Parkway? Close enough for the WGNS Action Line to broadcast live from a fifth floor conference room Monday (12/7/09) morning. Project Director Jennifer Garland said the complex officially opens at 5:00 o’clock Saturday morning, October 2nd. Twenty plus ambulances will transfer patients and all operations switch to the new hospital as the sun begins to rise on that day. (L-R below: Jenifer Garland, Matt Miller and Bart Walker doing “live” WGNS radio show from new hospital)
General Hospital Layout
Garland said that the first floor will include the emergency department, out-patient diagnostics, cafeteria, and the chapel. The second floor is devoted to surgery, same-day surgery, and critical care unit (CCU). Middle Tennessee Medical Center’s third floor will include labor and Delivery, Post-partum, Well baby nursery, and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. The fourth through seventh floors will be devoted to Medical and Surgical units.

There is a vertical white column going up one of the center glass walls. A broad horizontal roof line cuts through it. At night, lights focus on these structures and create a giant six-story tall cross that will be seen from miles away. This will accentuate the “faith based” healing available at Middle Tennessee Medical Center.
Many Unique Ways To Be Environmentally and Cost Efficient
Turner Universal Project Manager Matt Miller told how all of the pipes, wiring and other infrastructure were designed and laid out first on computer. This reduces waste and makes the project more cost and environmentally efficient. And as you walk down a hallway into surgical suites, lights automatically go “on” and “off” as they detect motion. Large retaining pools surround the 68.5 acre campus. Instead of dumping rain run-off into the city’s storm sewers, the water goes into an irrigation system for the plants, trees and grass. By the way, the new complex is four times larger than the current hospital on Highland Avenue that dates back to 1927. Another staggering statistic: the new hospital’s building permit is the largest single permit ever issued by the City of Murfreesboro!
Special Areas For Spiritual Healing
- The hospital’s Public Relations Coordinator Erin Yeldell told how the Infinity Pool will curve around the circular chapel (photo below). The Healing Garden will be in the space between the semi-circular water feature and the hospital’s wall. The photo below is looking down on the gardens and the round roof is that of the chapel. The architect’s rendering below that photo show how the finished chapel along with Healing Garden and Infinity Pool will look.
Spacious, Modern Private Hospital Rooms
All patient rooms are private and the patient’s bed and medical equipment are located in the same position in all rooms on all floors. (L-R: Erin Yeldell and Jenifer Garland show one of the patient rooms) The head of the bed goes against the right wall. The privacy window toward which Jennifer is pointing allows nurses to visually check on patients.

(Below photo) This shows the hallway outside patient rooms. Also visible is the nurse’s station. Each section of hallway will be identified by a prominent historical point of interest. Shacklett’s Photography, which is known for its pictures of early Rutherford County dating back to Civil War days, will have a giant photo mural at the entrance to each hall that identifies that area of the hospital. The beige runners seen in the room and hallway are for protection of the flooring as furniture and equipment is being installed.
(Below photos) One part of being energy efficient is to have plenty of floor-to-ceiling windows that allow natural sunlight to enter. (Left) This shows the floor to ceiling window that is in every patient room. (Middle) This is one of the family waiting rooms, and includes two walls of floor to ceiling windows. (Right) In the massive first-floor lobby, the double-story floor to ceiling windows creates a bright and positive feeling.
Surgery Suites
There are ten surgery suites being equipped (photo below: Matt Miller shows one operating room). Two additional spaces are blocked out for future operating rooms, but not being equipped at this time. The giant operating room light seen in movies will be hung from the octagonal hole in the ceiling.
And in the mechanical side of the new Middle Tennessee Medical Center there is a massive water cooling system with blue-green pipes (left photo) as well as huge boilers for heating the water using red pipes (right photo). In other words, “blue” is cool and “red” is hot. WGNS will have updates on the progress of the new hospital as we move through 2010 toward October.

Got something to say?

I’ve been seeing the new hospital grow out of the ground. Thanks for doing your radio show from there and showing us how it’s shaping up inside.
I am so proud of MTMC and all that it does for the Murfreesboro area. After moving here a few years ago from a large northern city, I have been amazed at how superior the local medical service is when compared to major cities. The quality of life and the friendliness of people are also far better here.
I AM VERY HAPPY TO BE APART OF THIS AND MY THANKS GOES OUT TO MTMC FOR GIVING ME THIS CHANCE THANK YOU.
