A local cemetery that sits on private property is in dire need of clearing and repair, however no plans are in place at this point to do anything about the Benevolent Cemetery. The graveyard that dates back to the 1800’s is next to the CSX railroad tracks under the South Church Street bridge.
Assistant City Manager Jim Crumley told WGNS it was scheduled to see some attention, but those plans fell through.
Headstones are scattered on the ground on the private property and homeless persons are currently living on the land. In fact, some of the homeless tents are actually sitting on top of graves.
