Initially, fiber optic lines were installed by Murfreesboro Electric so that substations could properly connect and be operated. However, the fiber could be used for other projects in the future for things like broadband internet service.

Places like Clarksville, Tennessee already have broadband internet offered to customers via fiber that is owned by the electric department and leased to an internet provider.

Murfreesboro Electric Department's new General Manager P. D. Mynatt stated...

Dark fibre networks are available for use in fibre-optic communication. Such fiber lines may be used for private networking, or as Internet access or infrastructure.

MED has been laying the groundwork for its high-speed network since 2008, when it began linking distribution equipment with fiber optic cable.

The main role of this high-speed fiber optic network today is in allowing MED to communicate with and control various parts of its distribution system, which results in more effective electric service.
