Main Street's Summer activities in Murfreesboro

For Main Street Murfreesboro, the community's nonprofit that protects and promotes downtown, summer is prime time for fun in the sun.

"Summer is by far our busiest time of the year," says Main Street Director Kathleen Herzog. "We launch our summer season with JazzFest on the first weekend in May, then we offer other summer concerts, sponsor the Saturday Market and throw one of the best parties in Murfreesboro as our annual fundraiser. We work hard to provide Rutherford County with a unique package of community-related summer fun and, with the exception of our fundraiser, it's all free!"

If you haven't been to Main Street's Saturday Market on the public square yet, you're missing one of Rutherford County's premier events for fresh food and friendship. The market is each Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon and will last until late fall. This gathering of farmers and others who produce wholesome and homemade offerings - not to mention gorgeous fresh flowers ready for your favorite vase - has become a community treasure and a favorite Saturday morning destination.

July 7 will mark the second of Main Street's four summer concerts, known as Friday Night Live. The concerts, all on the public square, are the first Friday in June, July, August and September, and they begin at 6:30 p.m. Bring a lawn chair and enjoy live music compliments of Main Street and the concert's sponsors. Artists for the remaining three concerts are:

  • July 7 featuring Entice, a high-energy band performing music from the 1950s to today.
  • Aug. 4 featuring Skyline Drive Band, with male and female vocalists and a three-piece horn section.
  • Sept. 1 featuring Everyday People, a dance band with a roster of over 100 of your favorite songs.

Also, mark your calendar now for Main Street's annual fundraiser, THE Summer Party, also known historically in the community as Taste of Rutherford. For just $50 a ticket, partygoers will enjoy food from a host of local restaurants, an open bar and live music. Scheduled for Saturday, July 29, at 7 p.m., the party will be at Daffodil Hill, the beautiful home of Dena Young and Mike Humnicky at 1710 East Main St.

The party is your chance to support everything you love about Murfreesboro's downtown. Don't forget, Main Street also organizes Trick or Treat on the Square, the annual Christmas Tree Lighting and so much more. General invitations for the party will be mailed near the end of June. If you don't receive one, please call the Main Street office at 615-895-1887 to request an invitation or to sign up by phone, or visit www.downtownmurfreesboro.com to pay online. Tickets will also be for sale at the door.

The Main Street Program is affiliated with the National Trust for Historic Preservation's National Main Street Center and follows the tenets of that program. Main Street capitalizes on the unique character of the courthouse square and the surrounding business district with the goal of transforming it into the cultural, social, professional and retail center of Rutherford County ... in essence, the hub of community life.
