Reports of rape among young adults in Rutherford County continues to be an ongoing problem. Last week, a report of rape was filed on the MTSU campus. In that case, the young female went to St. Thomas Rutherford Hospital where the report was filed. However, an arrest has yet to be made.

In the most recent case, a 19-year old woman in Murfreesboro told police that she was raped while spending the night at a home in the area of Mercury Boulevard. The victim says that she was asleep on the couch when she was awakened by an acquaintance who was on top of her. The male suspect was said to be "engaged in sexual intercourse with her without her consent," according to police.

At this point, the suspect has not been apprehended and his name is not being released to protect the identity of the victim.

According to the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network, 73% of sexual assaults are perpetrated by non-strangers. They also report that many rapist re-attack after they have been convicted and served time in a prison. According to the national organization, "46% of rapists who were released from prison were re-arrested within 3 years of their release for another crime."
