39th Uncle Dave Macon Days Continues

The 39th Annual Uncle Dave Macon Days is underway at Cannonsburgh Pioneer Village. Record crowds attended Friday's shows where Billy Henson was honored. Saturday is expected to attract an even larger audience.

Henson was born in Murfreesboro and continues to live here with his wife, but his musical talents have taken him to music lovers around the world. He continues to encourage new talent and often appears on WGNS' Truman Show.

The first Uncle Dave celebration was outside the Rutherford County Courthouse in July of 1978. It was the brainchild of the late pharmacist Jessie Messick along with Uncle Dave's grandson David Ramsey Macon.

The Uncle Dave Macon Days' HERITAGE AWARD honors those who have dedicated their musical careers and life to perpetuating old time music and dance. Russell Moore is the 2017 honoree.

The TRAILBLAZER AWARD honors an artist who has developed an old time musical stylings and performance that blaze the trail for future musicians. The Grascals were the 2017 Trailblazers.

Saturday brings the Motorless Parade at 10:00AM. One of Uncle Dave's sources of income was hauling merchandise from Murfreesboro to Woodbury on horse drawn wagons. He viewed trucks as an enemy, thus the "motorless parade". It begins at Central Magnet School and goes down East Main to Cannonsburgh.

Saturday's competition begins at 11:00AM. In addition, there will be old time gospel singing inside the church at Cannonsburgh from 1:00 to 3:00PM Saturday afternoon.

Saturday night also brings the Tennessee Mafia Jug Band onto the main stage at 6:00PM

The Heritage Award Ceremony with Russell Moore and III Tyme Out will be from 7:50-9:15PM Saturday night.

For thirty six years, the Uncle Dave Macon Days festival has proven itself to be a major heritage event in Middle Tennessee. It has received numerous awards and recommendations from tourism media.

Every July, over 30,000 people gather at Cannonsburgh Village in Murfreesboro, Tennessee to celebrate old time music with singing, dance, music storytelling, and historical preservation. Not only are visitors from all over the U.S., but many Europeans and Asian visitors attend as well.

The Uncle Dave Macon Days festival is a dynamic, nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation and promotion of old time music in Middle Tennessee.
