The new Walmart store on Joe B. Jackson Parkway at 231 South is already a hotbed for shoplifting. The most recent case involved a man stealing a 46" flat screen television.
One might ask, "How do you steal a 31 pound - 46 inch TV and actually get away with it?" Fair question.
According to the Murfreesboro Police Incident Report, the subject entered the store and headed to the electronics department. He then picked out a 46 inch TV, grabbed it and walked out the rear fire exit without paying for it. He then carefully loaded the TV into his white in color four door sedan where he jumped into the passenger seat. The driver then put the car in gear and drove away.
Minutes later, police spotted a four door Buick and matched the suspect in the car with Walmart video surveillance footage. Police say during the traffic stop, the passenger in the car moved over to the driver's seat when the driver got out to speak with Officer David Kelch. The passenger then drove off leaving his friend behind.
It only took police a matter of seconds to confirm that the passenger who fled the scene was 40-year old Michael Kevin Jones, according to the MPD report. Walmart quickly advised their intention to take out a warrant against Jones for the theft.
Evidently, Jones' friend told police that he drove him to Walmart to specifically steal the TV that would later be traded for narcotics in nearby LaVergne. It won't take long for an arrest to be made considering the fact that police are familiar with the suspect who has a fairly lengthy rap sheet. Police even know the suspects home address in Murfreesboro, which is a mile away from the new Walmart store.
At this point, the arrest has not been made. When caught, Jones will also face "Evading" charges along with the "Theft of a Motor Vehicle" charge. The report that WGNS obtained on Tuesday stated, "Mr. Jones was found to have numerous active warrants for his arrest."
Suspect description prior to an arrest being made:
Bearded white male wearing a light colored hat, glasses, black shoes and a maroon button down long sleeve shirt. The man was seen getting into a white four door sedan.
