NASHVILLE, Tenn. - A monthlong investigation aided by private license plate reader technology led to the arrest Thursday of a driver accused of striking and injuring four pedestrians before leaving the scene in Nashville.
Metro Nashville Police said the June 13 crash occurred at the intersection of Demonbreun Street and Music Circle East.
According to the preliminary investigation, a white GMC Sierra pickup truck was attempting to turn left at the intersection when the driver reportedly cut the turn short, drove onto the sidewalk and struck four pedestrians who were waiting to cross the street. Two of the pedestrians were using wheelchairs.
Police said one of the injured pedestrians remained hospitalized Thursday in the burn unit at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
Hit-and-Run Investigator Keith Covert reviewed camera footage and tracked the pickup truck as it left the crash scene. Investigators said the footage showed the truck entering a nearby parking garage equipped with license plate reader cameras.
Through a subpoena, Covert obtained identifying information connected to the vehicle, according to police.
Felipe Alvarado-Hernandez, 47, (Pictured above article) was arrested Thursday at his Antioch home, where investigators also located the pickup truck. Police said Alvarado-Hernandez admitted during an interview that he was driving the truck on the morning of the crash.
Alvarado-Hernandez was booked on 21 warrants. The charges include second-offense driving on a revoked license, along with four counts each of reckless endangerment, leaving the scene of an accident involving injury, failure to render aid, failure to provide proof of financial responsibility and failure to report an accident involving injury.
