MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WGNS) - Three local volunteers from the Heart of Tennessee Chapter of the American Red Cross are currently deployed on a two-week mission to Washington State to deliver critical aid following a devastating wildfire outbreak near Spokane.
Heart of Tennessee Chapter Executive Director John Mitchell, operating out of the Murfreesboro office at 501 Memorial Blvd, confirmed that local volunteers Jonathan Taylor (pictured above), Sandy Hughes, and Mike Bunch answered the national call to assist displaced families. Additional volunteers from the Rutherford County chapter remain on standby for upcoming deployments as disaster operations expand across the country.
According to a national situation briefing from Brad Kieserman, Vice President of Disaster Operations and Logistics for the American Red Cross, the disaster began on August 2nd, 2026, under a rare "Particularly Dangerous Situation" Red Flag Warning. High winds, extreme heat, and dry conditions pushed three separate wildfires through open terrain into populated neighborhoods around Washington's second-largest city.
The Spokane area complex consists of three major blazes:

The Old Trails Fire burned approximately 3,500 acres west of Spokane, jumping the Spokane River and sweeping into residential zones.

The Autumn Lane Fire reached roughly 3,300 acres and was identified as the most active fire in the complex.

The Fairview Fire burned roughly 700 acres, directly threatening communities east of the main Old Trails impact zone.
In less than 24 hours, the three fires destroyed more than 600 homes, businesses, and secondary structures, forced the evacuation of approximately 5,000 households, and burned over 5,000 acres. Flame movement and precautionary utility shutoffs cut power to tens of thousands of utility customers. Emergency workers evacuated the Mann-Grandstaff VA Medical Center, while fire conditions disrupted critical operations at Spokane's water-reclamation and waste-to-energy facilities.
A California interagency incident management team assumed command of the Spokane complex as officials designated the event the nation's highest-priority wildfire response. Statewide, approximately 4,000 firefighters are battling active blazes that have burned more than 250,000 acres across Washington State. Washington Governor Bob Ferguson declared a statewide emergency, activated the Washington National Guard, and instituted statewide fire restrictions.
In response, the American Red Cross activated a National Level One Disaster Response—the organization's highest operational level. Teams deployed over 200 trained responders to open three emergency shelters and deliver food, hydration, protective supplies, Disaster Health Services, and Disaster Mental Health support. Red Cross teams are positioning immediate financial assistance systems for eligible families and preparing fatality-support services if needed.
Because many local emergency workers live in the impacted zone, the Red Cross activated an Operation Compassion Task Group to care for workforce members whose homes were damaged or destroyed.
The Spokane response represents one of six concurrent national-level disaster operations currently managed by the American Red Cross, ahead of the traditional peak of the wildfire, Atlantic hurricane, and western Pacific typhoon seasons.
