ROCKVALE, Tenn. (WGNS) - The TSSAA has extended Rockvale High School’s football probation through the 2027-2028 school year following an altercation that broke out during a July 31st scrimmage against Beech High School.
Game officials reported that a brawl erupted in the handshake line after the contest, prompting unsportsmanlike conduct penalties for all bench personnel and players from both squads. Following an investigation into officials' reports, video footage, and school responses, the TSSAA handed down additional administrative penalties to both programs. Beech High School was placed on a one-year probation, while Rockvale saw its existing probation extended by two school years.
Along with the extended probation, the TSSAA fined Rockvale $500 and stripped the program of three pre-season scrimmages for the 2027-2028 school year, dropping their allowed total from four scrimmages down to one. Under TSSAA constitutional amendments passed in April 2026, scrimmages using registered officials carry the same sportsmanship rules and penalty structures as regular season games. Any player or coach ejected for unsportsmanlike conduct during a scrimmage must serve a mandatory suspension during the school's next regular season game.
Rockvale High School administration self-imposed corrective actions that the state office accepted. The school suspended two players for a preseason scrimmage and the first regular season game. State officials confirmed that two additional player suspensions will be served during the regular season opener due to prior TSSAA disciplinary action for unsportsmanlike conduct, bringing the total to four player suspensions for Week 1.
Rockvale High School Principal Dr. Meagan Turnbow addressed the situation by saying, "What happened on Friday night does not represent who we are at Rockvale High. Internally, we have taken steps to address the behavior of our team during and after the game, and our players have responded positively. We are now focused on continuing the season as a unified team with our sights set on the playoffs. I believe in our players and coaches and know we are all moving away from this with lessons learned and a more committed focus to create the best football program in our district."
