MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WGNS) - Murfreesboro Police Department (MPD) detectives arrested and charged an 18-year-old man with attempted second-degree murder and several other felonies following a shooting at a local extended stay hotel.
The shooting occurred just before 3:30 p.m. on Friday (August 7th) at the InTown Suites Murfreesboro Extended Stay hotel. An investigation revealed that Kendall Luckey allegedly brandished a handgun and fired at two men entering the hotel. One of those men returned fire in self-defense, hitting Luckey and an acquaintance with him.
Both wounded men sustained gunshot wounds and went to the hospital for treatment. Following the gunfire, the shooter and his companion fled the scene on foot and ran next door to the parking lot of the Tennessee College of Applied Technology (TCAT).
MPD officers quickly apprehended both individuals in the TCAT parking lot and detained them. Deputies from the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office (RCSO) assisted MPD at the scene, helping secure the perimeter and conducting a search using an RCSO K9 unit.
Authorities took Luckey into custody on Sunday (August 9th) after medical staff discharged him from the hospital. Detectives from the MPD Criminal Investigations Division charged Luckey with two counts of attempted second-degree murder, two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, four counts of reckless endangerment involving a deadly weapon, one count of employing a firearm during a dangerous felony, and one count of felony possession of Schedule VI drugs.
Police have not filed charges against the man who returned fire because evidence indicates he acted in self-defense. However, the investigation remains ongoing, and future charges could be considered once detectives present the case to a Grand Jury.
Luckey remains held at the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center on a $655,000 bond. A hearing is scheduled for September 14th in Rutherford County General Sessions Court.

The suspects attempted to flee the scene on foot immediately after the gunfire just before 3:30pm. MPD officers quickly apprehended both individuals in the parking lot of the neighboring Tennessee College of Applied Technology (TCAT).
Deputies from the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office (RCSO) assisted MPD at the scene. RCSO deputies helped secure the perimeter and conducted a search for the suspects using a K9 unit.
Detectives from the MPD Criminal Investigations Division continue to investigate the shooting.
