MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WGNS) - First responders from across Rutherford County converged on the Middle Tennessee State University campus to conduct their annual joint active shooter training exercise.
Officers and personnel from the MTSU Police Department, Murfreesboro Police Department (MPD), Smyrna Police Department (SPD), Rutherford County Sheriff's Office (RCSO), and La Vergne Police Department (LVPD) SWAT joined forces alongside crews from several Murfreesboro Fire Rescue Department (MFRD) stations.
The annual joint drill allows local law enforcement agencies and fire partners to operate inside a realistic environment. Department leaders stated the primary goal of the exercise is to strengthen real-time communication, streamline tactical coordination, and prepare personnel for high-stress crisis situations.
Instructors coordinated the multi-agency scenarios, while community volunteers acted as role players to simulate realistic emergency conditions for responding officers and firefighters. Emergency officials emphasized that while they hope these specialized skills are never required, routine joint exercises ensure local responders are prepared to protect the community quickly and effectively.
