MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (Rutherford Weather) - Sweltering heat is locking into Middle Tennessee as a Heat Advisory goes into effect starting Tuesday. Forecasters warn that heat index values will climb into the 105° range across Rutherford County during the peak afternoon hours.

The current advisory remains active through at least Thursday. However, long-range weather models show no immediate relief on the horizon, indicating that elevated heat and heavy humidity will likely remain across the region through at least next week.

Local emergency officials encourage Rutherford County residents to plan ahead for extended thermal exposure.  With the start of fall middle and high school sports, school officials across the county are also keeping a close eye on the forecast.

If you have to be outside for extended periods of time, it's advised you drink plenty of water, schedule outdoor work during cooler early morning or late evening hours, and check on vulnerable neighbors who may lack effective cooling equipment.
