MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WGNS) - Athletes and families at the Miracle Field complex in McKnight Park are playing on a brand-new surface this season. Murfreesboro Parks and Recreation replaced the aging crumb rubber playing field with an innovative, fully accessible synthetic turf designed to provide a smoother and safer environment for athletes of all abilities.

The upgraded turf addresses long-standing operational issues with the previous surface. The former rubber material became extremely slick whenever rain or moisture was present, frequently forcing game cancellations. The new synthetic turf resolves those safety hazards while allowing wheelchairs, walkers, crutches, mobility scooters, and prosthetic devices to move freely and confidently across the field.

The facility originally opened in May 2017, giving local children and adults with special needs a dedicated space to play baseball. As the program looks ahead to its 10th anniversary next year, city staff are preparing special celebrations, commemorative merchandise, and recognition for long-time coaches, players, and volunteers who have supported the league since its inception.

The upgrade ensures the local field remains a cornerstone for inclusive sports in Rutherford County heading into the fall season. Residents can learn more about local recreational programs by visiting https://www.murfreesboroparks.com.
