HERMITAGE, Tenn. (WGNS) - Rutherford County Schools Athletics Director Greg Wyant has been selected as a TSSAA Distinguished Service Award recipient for the 2026-27 academic year.
The recognition highlights a career spanning four decades of service to youth sports across Middle Tennessee. Wyant grew up in a football family as the son of the late Gary Wyant, a well-regarded collegiate assistant coach at Florida State, Georgia, Texas Tech, and the University of Tennessee. Despite his father's collegiate background, Greg Wyant discovered his own passion for coaching as a high school senior while managing his own Little League team. He worked as an assistant during his sophomore and junior years of high school before taking over his own squad.
Wyant earned his degree from Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) after taking a ten-year path through higher education, eventually committing fully to coaching and education. His coaching career included five state championship victories as an assistant football coach at Riverdale High School and Smyrna High School.
Wyant taught biology for 16 years while spending countless hours in weight rooms and serving seven years as the head football coach at Siegel High School. He later transitioned into administration, serving ten years as the athletics director at Siegel High School before taking on his current countywide role as Rutherford County Schools Athletics Director. His wife, Brooke Wyant, also serves the district as a biology teacher.
In addition to his local administrative duties, Wyant has served nearly a decade on the TSSAA Legislative Council. Reflecting on his career, Wyant pointed to lifelong relationships with former players—from attending their weddings to meeting their children—as the primary reward of his decades in education and sports. The TSSAA publicly recognized Wyant for his continuous dedication to student-athletes across the Volunteer State.
