MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WGNS) - A 37-year-old Murfreesboro man died overnight from self-inflicted gunshot wounds after a nearly five-hour standoff with law enforcement.
The Murfreesboro Police Department (MPD) responded to a home on Haynes Drive around 3:28 a.m. Sunday after receiving an emergency call from a friend. The caller informed dispatchers that the man was armed with a handgun and threatening self-harm.
Upon arrival, officers attempted to make contact and ordered the man to exit the home peacefully. When he refused to comply, MPD activated its Special Operations Unit (SOU), crisis negotiators, and drone team. Tactical teams and negotiators spent hours attempting to establish communication and de-escalate the situation.
Despite continuous efforts by the SOU and negotiation teams to bring the standoff to a peaceful resolution, authorities heard several gunshots coming from inside the residence after nearly five hours.
Officers entered the home and located the injured 37-year-old man inside. Emergency medical personnel transported him to a local hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead from self-inflicted gunshot wounds.
The Murfreesboro Police Department continues to investigate the incident. Further details have not yet been released.
