Blood Crisis Hits Home in Rutherford County

MURFREESBORO, TN (WGNS) - The American Red Cross has declared a national blood supply crisis, and the impact is being felt right here in Rutherford County. Donations across the country have fallen to a four‑year summer low, pushing the national inventory of certain vital blood types below a single day’s supply. It’s a rare and serious declaration — only the second time in the Red Cross’ 145‑year history that the organization has used the term “national crisis.”

So what does “crisis level” really mean? In simple terms, the available blood supply is dangerously depleted. Type O positive and Type O negative — the blood types most often used in emergencies and trauma cases — have dropped below a one‑day national supply. Because of that shortage, the Red Cross has been forced to limit how much Type O blood it can distribute to hospitals. That leaves medical centers across the country facing tough decisions, including postponing non‑urgent elective surgeries.

This isn’t just a problem in big cities or distant states. It affects the entire United States, including Tennessee. Hospital networks in Middle Tennessee, including Ascension Saint Thomas, have already postponed elective procedures because the blood simply isn’t available. Summer heatwaves, wildfire smoke, poor air quality, and seasonal illnesses all contributed to a dramatic drop in donor turnout nationwide.

Normally, when one region runs low, the Red Cross can shift blood from an area with a surplus. But this time, there is no surplus. Every region is strained at the same time, leaving no cushion anywhere in the country.

Here in Murfreesboro, the Heart of Tennessee Chapter of the American Red Cross is urging residents to step up. Executive Director John Mitchell says the solution is straightforward: donations. All blood types are needed, but Type O and platelets are in emergency demand. The Red Cross notes that adding just three more donors to every blood drive nationwide would significantly stabilize the supply.
