HALLOWEEN UPDATE: A "*Suggested" Change of Date by the City of Murfreesboro and the County Confirmed

Oct 31, 2013 at 06:00 pm by bryan

Despite gloomy weather, the Murfreesboro square still had trick or treaters Thursday afternoon. Of course, the number was far less than compared to years past. Pictures from the square are posted below, along with information on Halloween events, notices and information for Friday night.

Details on Trick or Treating Below:

Alan Bozeman with the City of Murfreesboro released a statement on the subject of trick or treating Thursday night that may help some parents decide what to do...

Bozeman told WGNS in an email: Although the City does not designate days and hours for trick or treating, there is a chance of severe weather Thursday afternoon and evening. The forecast calls for the possibility of severe thunderstorms and some storms may be dangerous.

Parents and trick or treaters are encouraged to watch the weather.  If Mother Nature does not cooperate, the City hopes citizens will honor the spirit of the holiday if trick or treaters visit on Friday.  If heavy rain, thunderstorms and strong winds do develop, it is unlikely that many doorbells will ring on Thursday.  So let’s save some candy for Friday!

There has been no change to Trick or Treat on the Square, hosted by Main Street.  That activity is scheduled for Thursday, October 31st from 3:00 PM-6:00 PM.

Previous News Statements:

Rutherford County Mayor Ernest Burgess previously stated...

Local business owner Gloria Christy of Shacklett's Photography on the Murfreesboro square told WGNS downtown businesses will be ready for Halloween Thursday afternoon...

Christy said Shacklett's Photography will also have their Pumpkin Patch picture setting open on Friday as well as Thursday between 3 and 6 in the afternoon.

Stones River Mall Says - It's ON!!!!! Thursday:

On Thursday night trick or treaters can stay out of the rain by visiting the Stones River Mall between 5 and 7pm for not only candy, but also a costume contest.

Children age 12 and younger (accompanied by parents) are invited to trick-or-treat at participating retailers throughout the mall.

Be sure to enter your little ones in the Costume Contest, held in Center Court at 6 p.m. Prizes will be awarded in three age categories: 0-3, 4-7, 8-12.

Rutherford County Sheriff's Department Says NO-GO for Trick or Treating...

Threats of damaging winds and rains prompted Sheriff Robert Arnold to ask Rutherford County citizens to postpone Halloween trick or treating until Friday.

“We don’t want to risk the lives of our children,” Sheriff Arnold said.

The National Weather Service forecast predicts a risk of damaging winds during the traditional trick or treat hours between 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday.

Sheriff Arnold postponed the annual Trunk or Treat Halloween event at the Sheriff’s Office from Halloween until 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at 940 New Salem Highway in Murfreesboro.

“We hope parents and community organizations will consider postponing the events for the safety of the children and families until Friday and still enjoy the Halloween festivities,” Sheriff Arnold said.

More from the Sheriff's Department:

Children may celebrate Halloween from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office at 940 New Salem Highway.

They may collect candy from sheriff’s deputies and Murfreesboro and Smyrna firefighters during Trunk or Treat.

Children may pet horses, see the K-9s and view equipment. Funnel cakes and hot chocolate will be sold.

Also, older children and adults can toss pumpkins in the Angels for Protectors Punkin Chunkin contest for a $5 donation.
