This is not a simple theft case... Over 3,000 pounds of USED batteries were stolen from MID-Tenn Metal Exchange in Murfreesboro (118 S. Rutherford Blvd.). The theft occurred over the past several days and at this point, no suspects have been named.
Reports indicate that the scrap yard is under video surveillance, but it is not known if police were able to capture the getaway vehicle on video. The average car battery weights about 39-pounds. Over half of that weight is the lead that is inside the battery.If a total of 3,500 pounds worth of batteries were stolen, that equals around 89 to 90-batteries.
Metal exchange companies buy batteries for the lead. 80% of lead used in the world is utilized in batteries. America is the second leading region to use lead. Asia came in at number one and Europe follows at a close third for lead used in batteries.
