A brand new sign ordinance for windows in businesses will go into full effect on June 3, 2016. According to the City of Murfreesboro, a sign cannot take up more than 25% of the total window space. The new rules exclude doors and building façade.
As for doors, signage shall not exceed 2 ¼ square feet. For windows that are over the ground level, window signage is not allowed to cover more than 15% of the surface on any window and each window is considered separately.
The good news for existing businesses with a window sign already in place... their signs will be grandfathered in if the sign was installed prior to the first reading of the change.
On a side note, businesses will be prohibited from lighting the perimeter of their windows with strip lighting. Flashing signs remain prohibited.
