The Murfreesboro Building & Codes Department has scheduled a special Stakeholders Meeting concerning fee increases and code adoptions, Thursday, July 18, 2018. The meeting will be held at 4 p.m. in the City Council Chambers, 111 W. Vine St., City Hall, Murfreesboro, 38128.

The FY19 budget included $550,000 in new income from building permit fee increases while maintaining one of the lowest permit costs in Middle Tennessee. A review of fees charged by surrounding jurisdictions revealed that the permit fees presently adopted by the City is in some cases 50 percent less than other municipalities and governments.

The City of Murfreesboro is proposing an increase to most permit fees, including residential building permits for new construction and renovations. Some of the other proposals call for an increased permit fee for gas, plumbing, mechanical permits and permits for pools, signs, and service fees.

On the flipside, no fee changes are proposed for commercial building permits.

The City of Murfreesboro is also in the initial stages of updating new building codes. The State of Tennessee requires all jurisdictions to have adopted codes that are within 7 years of the most recently published code by the International Codes Congress.

The City will be proposing the adoption of the 2018 International Code Series for adoption by the end of 2018.
