(MURFREESBORO) Thursday (10/29/2020) night's Murfreesboro City Council addressed the request to rezone farmland that lies between Medical Center Parkway and Wilkinson Pike. The proposal would change the zoning from agriculture to mixed-use development. It would include commercial developments, along with a large residential area, and a hotel behind McDonald's at the corner of Wilkinson Pike and Greshampark Drive.
City Council Member Bill Shacklett explained . . .
This massive farmland is across from The Avenue of Murfreesboro, and fronts Medical Center Parkway from the point where the new Redstone Federal Credit Union is located all the way to Rooms To Go. Behind those businesses, the land covers Wilkinson Pike up to Greshampark Drive.
Shacklett told WGNS that the planning staff did not recommend the proposal as presented. The city planing staff had asked the developer to address certain points, and the plans went so far--but not far enough.
WGNS asked Councilman Shacklett what happened . . .
Obviously, the city's planning staff wants to see something in this project, and WGNS asked the councilman what it was . . .
In fact, the city's planning staff was also concerned with the proposed hotel and the zoning that allowed 75-foot maximum height.
While we're speaking about hotels, with the downturn in the hospitality industry, Murfreesboro has recently seen three hotel plans hit hard times.
Once again, the Murfreesboro City Council's "vote to defer" has left the door open for the developers to create a plan that would resolve the concerns of the Murfreesboro Planning staff.
