Officer Adam Wilson in Serious Condition at UT Medical Center

(KNOXVILLE)  Knoxville police have not released the name of the student who died after reportedly initiating shots at officers at Austin-East Magnet. 20-year police veteran Adam Wilson, who was the school resource officer at the high school, was hit by shots and underwent surger Monday evening at UT Medical Center. He is reported to be in serious condition.

Around 3:15PM Monday afternoon police received a call that a student was on campus and reportedly armed.

Officers discovered the male in the restroom and called for him to come out. The student refused and allegedly started firing at the officers. One of the bullets hit Officer Wilson. At that point the police returned the fire and hit the student. He was pronounced deceased at the scene. The only identity given is that he was a student.

The TBI, ATF and Knoxville police are investigating the event.

They interrogated students and faculty who witnessed the tragic episode, and the Knox County District Attorney is also seeing evidence from the body cams that were on the police officers.

Knoxville area churches are having special programs in an effort to heal the community. This was the fourth shooting in recent months in the area around Austin-East Magnet School.

Austin-East was closed Tuesday and will be on Wednesday as well. In addition the Knox County School Board noted that counselors are available to help students through this tragedy.
