NASHVILLE, TN — A recently passed senate bill in the state of Tennessee has a focus on sex education and gender identity. On Monday, State Senator Janice Bowling, named as the sponsor of Senate Bill 2766, explained what the bill entails...

According to the current "Teacher Code of Ethics" in Tennessee, an educator has an obligation to help students and not discriminate against, “…race; color; creed; disability; sex; national origin; marital status; political or religious beliefs; family, social, cultural background; or sexual orientation…”

If the governor signs-off on the bill that was passed by the senate, the new version will suggest teachers can’t discriminate against, “…race; color; creed; disability; sex; national origin; marital status; political or religious beliefs; family background; or the student's membership in a protected class under federal or state law..."

In response to the Tennessee Senate’s vote, Molly Whitehorn, Human Rights Campaign Associate Regional Campaign Director, issued the following statement:  “The extremist, anti-equality majority in Tennessee’s Senate voted today to legalize discrimination against school children simply because of who they are.”

Whitehorn went on to say, “This is literally a license to bully LGBTQ+ kids, and what’s baffling is that it also removes the requirement that sex education in schools be medically accurate. Sadly, this aligns with what we’ve seen from this legislature in recent years, which has seen fit to bully the LGBTQ+ community repeatedly with wave after wave of targeted, discriminatory legislation.”

Again, the bill passed the Tennessee Senate on Monday…
