Internet Exclusive: The City of Murfreesboro School System is growing and progressing daily in our community. According to the end of the year newsletter filed by Murfreesboro Schools, a lot has been accomplished in the schools.
Here is a glimpse into the City School System (From the Schools):
- They welcomed aboard: Don Bartch--principal at Scales; Dr. Tammy Grizzard--principal at Hobgood; Maria Johnson--assistant principal at Scales; Dr. Terrance Haynes--assistant principal at Mitchell-Neilson Elementary; Laurie Offutt--assistant principal at John Pittard; Lea Bartch--assistant principal at Discovery; Jenny Ortiz--assistant principal at Bradley and Scales; Kimberly Osborne--assistant principal at Hobgood; Kim Frank--Coordinator of Behavioral Support; Patty Kennedy--Supervisor of the Department for Exceptional Children; and Sheri Arnette and Kristina Maddux--Instructional Coordinators.
- The Murfreesboro Council approved land for the new school that will be on the west side of town.
- The arrival and dismissal procedures at the schools changed, and we created new partnerships with the Police Department to increase safety.
- They implemented the universal breakfast program.
- The bus ridership increased by a third, and two new buses were purchased.
- The FUNN program in partnership with the Parks and Recreation Department introduced children to gardening.
- The Reading Clinic at MN thrived, a new Reading Clinic was opened at Cason Lane, and the Franklin Heights Family Learning and Resource Center helped 80 students a week with homework.
- The reading growth scores were the highest in the mid-state; 7 out of 10 schools were in the top 5% of the state in either growth or achievement; Bradley and Discovery were named Award Schools; and Discovery received National Blue Ribbon School designation.
- They began a partnership with The Guidance Center, expanded partnerships with local faith-based organizations, strengthened partnerships with the Technology Center, started a partnership with Vanderbilt's Gifted and Talented Program, continued Club Marvel that takes 100 students onto MTSU's campus once a month, watched children investigate science through Camp PRISM, and had a 7,000 student field trip to MTSU's basketball game.
- The City Schools implemented Math Common Core and piloted English Common Core.
- The City Schools Foundation had terrific events that enabled fiscal support to the district.
- Hobgood acquired four new classrooms and is in the throes of new administrative offices, a new library, and a new dining room/kitchen.
- Discovery School received a new HVAC system, and Bradley planned for an elevator.
- Standards-based report cards were sent home each nine weeks, and a Parent-Portal was opened as part of a data dashboard.
- New grants were acquired by the ESP program.
- They HAD ONLY ONE SNOW DAY!!!
