MURFREESBORO, TN — A Rutherford County school bus carrying elementary students was involved in a traffic accident Tuesday afternoon at the intersection of Calumet and South Church Street in Murfreesboro. The intersection is across the street from Indian Hills Golf Course.
According to James Evans, Chief Communications Officer for the Rutherford County Schools, Bus No. 163 was on its regular route for Barfield Elementary School when the crash occurred at around 2:45 p.m. The incident involved one other vehicle and took place while the bus was transporting approximately 12 students.
Fortunately, no major injuries were reported. First responders from Murfreesboro Fire and Rescue, Murfreesboro Police Department, and the Tennessee Highway Patrol arrived promptly at the scene. Supervisors from the fire department and officials from the county school’s transportation department also responded to assist with the investigation and mitigation.
Initial findings suggest that the school bus driver was not at fault. Reports indicate that the other vehicle involved may have pulled out in front of the bus, causing the collision. However, authorities continue to investigate the incident, but officials are thankful that the situation did not result in serious harm to any of the children or personnel involved.
