Murfreesboro Woman Discovers $1 Million Identity Theft Scheme Involving Homes and Cars

MURFREESBORO, TN – What started as a casual credit check through Credit Karma quickly spiraled into a financial nightmare for one Murfreesboro resident, after she discovered her identity had allegedly been used to fraudulently purchase over $1 million in real estate and vehicles—including a 2023 Nissan Rogue.

The case unfolded one weekend ago when Murfreesboro Police were dispatched to an apartment on Bradyville Pike. The caller, a female resident, reported that she had been the victim of identity theft after reviewing her credit report. The discoveries she made were staggering.

According to the report, the unknown suspect or suspects allegedly purchased two homes under her name beginning in May 2023, with both properties totaling over $1 million. Even more alarming, the credit activity showed active residency in the homes as far back as last year—without the victim's knowledge or consent.

In addition to the real estate purchases, the credit report revealed two vehicle loans: one for a 2020 Nissan Sentra and the other for a 2023 Nissan Rogue. Together, the vehicles were valued at more than $25,000.

The victim told police she had no connection to the locations listed on the report, had never owned a car, and did not even possess a driver’s license. She also stated she had not shared her personal information with anyone and had no idea who could be behind the scheme.

Police informed the victim of the necessary steps to begin clearing her name, starting with filing disputes with the credit bureaus and the lenders involved. Officers also advised her to place a lock or freeze on her Social Security number to prevent further fraudulent activity.

No arrests have been made at this time, and the investigation may span multiple jurisdictions depending on where the fraudulent purchases occurred. Authorities are working to determine who currently occupies the homes and how the suspect managed to gain access to the victim’s personal information.

This incident highlights the growing threat of identity theft and the importance of regularly monitoring credit activity.
