SMYRNA, TN48-year-old Wilmer Umanzor-Bonilla remains behind bars after being arrested by Smyrna Police in connection to the aggravated rape of a child in Rutherford County. According to authorities, Umanzor-Bonilla was apprehended by a Smyrna detective following an extensive investigation that began in 2023.

Detectives have charged Umanzor-Bonilla with two counts of Aggravated Rape of a Child, a charge that stems from an incident believed to have occurred on August 1, 2021—nearly four years ago. While the arrest came after a two-year investigation, law enforcement emphasized that the original crime dates back to 2021.

Aggravated Rape of a Child, as defined under Tennessee Code Annotated § 39-13-531, is one of the most serious offenses in state law. The statute applies when an individual is accused of engaging in unlawful sexual penetration with a child under the age of 8. If convicted, the punishment includes a mandatory minimum sentence of 25 years without the possibility of parole, and mandatory lifetime sex offender registration.

Those facing this charge are typically accused of knowingly or intentionally committing this heinous act. Victims of such crimes often endure severe and lasting physical and psychological trauma, which can require long-term therapy and support.

Cases involving this charge usually involve complex forensic evidence, witness testimony, and sometimes expert psychological evaluations before going to trial. Legal experts caution that judicial proceedings in such cases often take time, particularly due to the serious nature of the allegations and the need to ensure a fair trial for all parties involved.

Umanzor-Bonilla remains in custody as the case moves forward in the Rutherford County judicial system. And while the current address of the suspect is behind bars at the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center, he normally resides at a mobile home park on Naylor Avenue in Murfreesboro.

The courts most recent action was an agreement to a continuance that was agreed upon this past April. His upcoming "Status Hearing" has been scheduled to take place on August 7, 2025 at 9 AM before the Honorable Barry Tidwell in Circuit Court.
