From Rutherford County to California: A Look at America’s Rollercoaster Gas Prices

RUTHERFORD COUNTY, TN - Average gasoline prices in Tennessee have fallen by 7 cents this week compared to last week. Right now, regular unleaded sits at $2.78 per gallon — down from last week’s $2.85 average. Premium grade fuel is down by 8 cents, currently averaging $3.61 per gallon. Last week, premium was going for $3.69 per gallon in Tennessee. For diesel, you can expect to fork over $3.42 per gallon, which is only 3 cents cheaper than last week’s price of $3.45.

RUTHERFORD CO. GAS PRICES: Out of all 95 counties in Tennessee, AAA (Triple A) ranked Rutherford County at number EIGHT  on the list for having the cheapest gas in the state, averaging $2.69 per gallon right now. South of Murfreesboro in Bedford County, the cost of regular unleaded is sitting at $2.63 per gallon. Head north to the Lebanon/Mt. Juliet area and you’ll pay about 3 cents more than Rutherford County — Wilson County prices are averaging $2.66 per gallon. A short drive one county over to the east of Murfreesboro will cost you 14 cents more per gallon — Cannon County gas is currently averaging $2.83 per gallon.

The absolute cheapest county to buy gas in is a county that you can expect to buy more fuel in, due to the low prices. About two counties south of Rutherford County is Moore County, proudly ranked number one for cheap fuel. The average price of regular unleaded there is $2.62 per gallon as of Monday morning.

Meanwhile, west of Rutherford County, you’ll find the priciest place to refuel in Tennessee. Neighboring Williamson County ranks dead last at number 95, with regular unleaded averaging $3.11 per gallon. Also to our west is Nashville, the city where brides-to-be go to celebrate their upcoming vows. There, gas is sitting at an average price of $2.79 per gallon. And in case your curiosity is at an all-time high, Stag and Hen reports that Nashville is the second most popular destination in the country for bachelorette parties. Apparently, you’ll pay a bit more at the pump for that final fling before the ring!!

Across the country, according to AAA Auto Club, Tennessee now ranks fourth in the nation for having the cheapest gas in the U.S. If you want even cheaper fuel, head to Mississippi, where you can top off your tank for just $2.71 per gallon. The Magnolia State holds the number one spot for cheapest gas in America. On the opposite end, the state with the highest price for regular unleaded is out west. In California, gas is averaging $4.59 per gallon — more expensive than Tennessee’s premium grade fuel!

If your car prefers premium, Oklahoma’s got you covered — it’s number one for cheapest premium fuel at $3.39 per gallon. The Volunteer State is the eighth cheapest for premium, at an average of $3.61 per gallon. But if you’re filling up in California, brace yourself: premium gas there will cost you a jaw-dropping $4.99 per gallon.

It's summertime and that means you may be planning to rent a car for a family vacation to check out the Mayan ruins in Mexico. That said, you’re family can expect to pay a little more for that fill-up. Gas in Mexico is selling for an average of $1.25 per liter. To put that into perspective for your wallet, let’s convert liters to gallons — so a road trip through the Yucatán Peninsula, which separates the Gulf of Mexico from the Caribbean Sea, will cost you over a dollar more per gallon than Rutherford County prices. Gas in Mexico is around $3.75 per gallon at the pump.

Meanwhile in America, GasBuddy.com reports the national average price of gasoline has fallen 3.8 cents per gallon in the last week, now averaging $3.14 per gallon. However, the national average is up 1.1 cents per gallon from a month ago, but still stands 32.1 cents per gallon lower than a year ago. That’s according to GasBuddy data compiled from more than 11 million weekly price reports covering over 150,000 gas stations across the country.

DIESEL: If diesel is your fuel of choice, you’re in the right state if you’re reading this in Tennessee. The Volunteer State ranks as having the 10th cheapest diesel prices in the country, currently averaging $3.42 per gallon. But for the lowest diesel prices of all, head to the Lone Star State — diesel in Texas is averaging $3.32 per gallon.

If you’re traveling this week behind the wheel of a diesel-powered ride, do yourself a favor and avoid filling up in Hawaii — not that you could drive there anyway. The Aloha State has diesel priced at $5.25 per gallon today. California comes in second — and yes, you can drive there — with diesel averaging $5.11 per gallon.
