RUTHERFORD COUNTY, TN - Middle Tennessee Electric (MTE), in partnership with the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), is reminding customers how to stay cool without breaking the bank. As record-breaking temperatures sweep across the region, the demand for electricity has surged, prompting utilities to offer practical tips for managing energy usage during extreme heat.
With HVAC systems being the largest energy consumers in most homes, MTE recommends keeping filters clean and adjusting thermostats up by a few degrees—each degree can lower power bills by up to 3%. Ashley England with the TVA highlighted the importance of changing-out your HVAC air filter…
Ceiling fans are in the majority of homes and England noted… Using ceiling fans that spin counterclockwise can help circulate cool air, but they should be turned off when not in use to avoid unnecessary energy use.
Other suggestions include running large appliances like clothes dryers at night to ease strain on cooling systems and reduce overall household temperatures. These small adjustments can add up to big savings while keeping homes comfortable during the hottest days of summer.
