MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Reports of an active shooter on the campus of Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) on Tuesday were confirmed to be completely false, according to Murfreesboro Police.

At noon, police issued a statement on social media clarifying that the call was a “false call” and that there was no active threat to students, faculty, or staff. Authorities said, “Reports of an active threat on the MTSU campus has been proven untrue. Students can resume normal activities. Murfreesboro Police, MTSU Police and other law agencies are on campus as a precaution.”

Law enforcement presence remained on campus for additional safety measures, but normal operations quickly resumed after the confirmation.

According to MTSU’s website, while active shooter events on college campuses are rare, preparedness is critical. The Department of Homeland Security defines an active shooter as “an individual actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a confined and populated area.” DHS guidance encourages students and faculty to stay alert to their surroundings and be ready to act quickly should a real incident ever occur.

Murfreesboro Police emphasized that Tuesday’s event was not an actual threat and reassured the community that safety remains the top priority.
