MURFREESBORO, TN (WGNS News) - Ascension Saint Thomas Rutherford Hospital continued to grow right alongside the community it serves in 2025, rolling out major expansions and new services to keep pace with Rutherford County’s record‑setting population boom. The faith‑based health system invested a remarkable $537 million across Middle Tennessee last year, modernizing facilities, expanding capacity, and improving access for families from Nashville to Murfreesboro and beyond.

Rutherford County once again claimed the title of Tennessee’s fastest‑growing county in 2025, even surpassing Hamilton County. Murfreesboro itself now ranks as the 16th fastest‑growing city in the nation among cities with more than 100,000 residents. With that kind of momentum, Ascension Saint Thomas made a deliberate push to strengthen its footprint here at home.

One of the biggest projects was the expansion of the Critical Care Unit at Ascension Saint Thomas Rutherford. The hospital added 18 new beds and a brand‑new ambulance bay as part of a $42 million investment. The upgrade increases critical‑care capacity from 32 to 50 beds and lays the groundwork for new high‑acuity service lines, including cardiac surgery, advanced cardiology, and neurosciences. Hospital leaders say the growth will also mean new jobs as they hire additional staff to support the expanded services for Rutherford and surrounding counties.

The health system also earned national recognition in 2025. Ascension Saint Thomas Hospital appeared on Newsweek’s list of the World’s Best Hospitals, highlighting the quality and safety of its care teams across Middle Tennessee.

Alongside the bricks‑and‑mortar improvements, Ascension Saint Thomas relaunched its “Nothing Shall Be Impossible” campaign. The refreshed effort leans into the system’s faith‑based mission, spotlighting stories of healing, hope, and medical innovation. While the visuals and messaging have been updated, the heart of the campaign remains the same: a commitment to spiritual tradition, clinical excellence, and community‑centered care.

That community focus was also on display during the 2025 Medical Mission at Home, where more than 860 Middle Tennesseans received free medical, dental, vision, and behavioral‑health services. Nearly 1,000 volunteers helped make the event possible. Since 2008, the program has served more than 25,860 people, underscoring the system’s dedication to holistic care for all.

Looking ahead, Ascension Saint Thomas and Murfreesboro Medical Clinic are teaming up to bring a new freestanding emergency department to eastern Rutherford County. The $19 million project will anchor MMC’s upcoming medical and retail development near Lascassas Pike and East Pitts Lane. The new ER will offer 24/7 emergency care and complement the outpatient services planned for the same site—another sign that healthcare access is expanding right along with the county’s population.
